Understanding Controller Diagnostics & Stick Drift

Modern gaming controllers—including Sony DualSense, Microsoft Xbox Wireless, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers—rely on analog potentiometer thumbsticks. Over months of gameplay, microscopic carbon wear, mechanical spring degradation, and dust create minor resistance shifts known as stick drift.

How to Interpret Test Results

  • Resting Deadzone: When untouched, both analog sticks should rest at (0.00000, 0.00000). A resting value exceeding ±0.05 indicates mild drift; exceeding ±0.10 often causes unwanted character movement in games.
  • Circularity & Range: Rotate the stick in full 360° circles. The reticle should touch the outer perimeter without hitching or flattening at diagonal angles.
  • Trigger Linearity: Analog triggers (LT/RT or L2/R2) should smoothly transition from 0% at rest to 100% when fully depressed.
